





Jerry Pinkney has been illustrating children’s books since 1964 and has created more than 200 children’s book. He has the rare distinction of being the recipient of five Coretta Scott King Awards, five Caldecott Honors, and the winner of the 2010 Caldecott Medal for The Lion and the Mouse. He has received four New York Times Best Illustrated Awards, four Gold and four Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, and the Boston Globe Honor Book Award.
Mr. Pinkney’s books include many exquisitely illustrated adaptations of fables, folktales, and nursery rhymes, including The Ugly Duckling, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Kittens, The Little Red Hen, and Aesop’s Fables. He has collaborated with author Julius Lester on several books, including John Henry and Uncle Remus: the Complete Tales.
Sensitivity to and an interest in a variety of cultures has always been a dominant theme of Mr. Pinkney’s work. He has also drawn inspiration for a significant part of his work from African American culture. In addition to his work on children's books, he is an extremely successful artist who has had numerous one-man retrospectives at venues ranging from the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Mr. Pinkney lives in New York with his wife, the author Gloria Pinkney. The Pinkneys have four adult children, all of whom are working in the creative arts.
